CAHKEYDONEE LITERARY PROJECT
Cah-key-do’-nee is the Caddo word meaning to harvest. The aim of Cahkeydonee Literary Project is to harvest the love of reading and to share the transformative power of literature by putting books and other reading materials in the hands of young people from reservation communities where public libraries are not readily accessible. We place special emphasis on providing literature by Native authors and other authors of color.
WE BELIEVE:
- We believe in and support tribal sovereignty. Tribal governments know what’s best for their communities, so Cahkeydonee Literary Project will partner with tribes in designing the specific delivery of books that best supports their community.
- We believe that Indians can and should support our own communities. We are an organization that is Native-created, Native-run, and a majority of our Board will remain citizens of tribal nations.
- We believe in the power of representation. We put a special emphasis on providing books by Native authors and other authors of color because representation matters, and there is a demonstrable power in Native children seeing themselves in the books they read and in the writers they admire.
- We believe in the ability of literature and storytelling to change the world.
